This is somewhat of a template I am about to use as a guide for inking my typography for my album cover. I am more than likely going to scale down the shaded words ('the', 'of', and 'the' again), move the second 'the' up to rest next to 'of' under the word 'story', and experiment with different placement for the type as well as trying out some of the swirly connective stuff I did in the previous sketch. I want to achieve some degree of connectivity/flow/pattern between the letters.

Eliminated a second 'Student Name' box column on the right side of the page and allowed for one student's row to run all the way across the two pages, also allowing for commentary specific to attendance/class participation/etc (on the left page) and commentary specific to grades/etc (on the right page). Anyway, this one seems to work better based on alignment, ease on the eyes, etc.

This image shows the double-page spread for 'week 1' of the teacher log book. If the page on the right is turned, you will see an identical 2-page spread entitled 'week 2' and so on.... This will continue through however many weeks I decide to put in the log book (probably 16 weeks) and will be followed by several 'meetings' pages with spaces for the teacher to take notes. And again, as said before, the dots lining the valleys of each page mark where the spiral coil will run through the page once bound.

It's been a challenge achieving correct alignment/spacing across the pages, but I feel like I've gotten closer to a final solution. Will still probably make some minor changes. Inverted the colors so that the spaces for writing (the 'pen receptive' areas) would be blank.

First draft for 'Grades' section of Teacher log book. The numerical grade would be written in each box (A1=Assignment 1) and would correspond to the Name of the assignment. I am assuming that the computer application for this log book would recognize handwriting and would be able to chart the grades with an actual font or on a graph. The teacher would write the name of the assignments at the bottom section. So..when inputed into the computer application, the teacher could click on 'Assignment1: The Industrial Revolution essay' and a list of each student and what grade they received would appear along with 'average test score', a visual chart, etc.... I guess I am assuming a lot on the recognition technology of the pen's application but hey....we landed on the moon. Here are the drafts for both of the sections of the teacher's log I have done so far ... TBC.

The first series of images document my process for the masthead. Pretty much narrowed down from many typefaces about six to work with-began experimenting by adding/subtracting/mixing elements of what I liked or disliked about each of them. I tried to experiment typographically strictly in the digital realm for this part of the project which is sortof unusual for me, but it actually turned out fairly interesting.

Rather small the images are, click as you know well. More to come..

Website Project: A Tour of Chateau de Austin

My 'client' is Austin. He wishes for me to create a site that serves as an interactive 'virtual' tour of his house. Having visited several times, I am fairly familiar with the house and its various array of nick-nacks. There exists tons of vintage objects: furniture, lamps, paintings, mannequins and other dangerously mysterious things I dare not utter in public forum. It sort of seems like a step back in time when you walk in, so my initial idea is to start with a short animation of entering a time machine and ending up either at the front of his house or descending down the chimney into his living room. Anywho, from there you're able to navigate through each room, clicking on various objects throughout the house for more information/stories about them, ending with a departure via time machine, which you believe is going to take you 'Back to the Future' to where you existed before but, instead, suffers a glitch and you end up somewhere and sometime far far far away into the future..when humans have gills.

The following images are basic format plans and a little information on how the whole thing is going to flow. I haven't really posed the whole time travel extravaganza opening/closing sequence to Austin yet so to be continued...Oh, and also, there are a few things I wrote/drew during the sketch process as a joke, so don't take it all too concrete...except for the Mario Brothers noises..that's totally going down.

Last night, after trying several more techniques in attempt to use a scanned photograph of Keith Haring for my mag cover, I decided to turn the page and try out some cover concepts based strictly off of illustration. I feel as though illustration is definitely my strong point. Even though I definitely need some more photographic pieces for my portfolio, I will save that venture for a project which doesn't require obtaining a good photo of the deceased. I have really gotten into learning about Haring and his life story and I believe his story/work as well as his NY gallery opening this month are definitely worth promoting, so I do not believe I will be switching lead articles at this point.

To get the train rolling, I thought it would be helpful to sit down with my Haring book and a few sites pulled up and begin sketching/exploring his visual language. At this point, for the cover concept, I'm leaning towards either:

a. an illustration of Haring and some sort of physical/mental interaction between his portrait and his trademark characters

b. an illustrated collage consisted of his trademark characters/objects/themes and perhaps illustrated typographic elements

Either way, I'm still trying to decide if I should give the magazine a 'Special Edition' title/the 'Keith Haring' issue. Not sure yet.

Below are a couple of sketch experiments I've done so far. For the first one, I sortof free-form sketched while glancing at pictures of Keith and his work. For the second one, I began seeking out images/characters/elements which seem to be Haring's trademarks and sketched out a 'Keith Haring Alphabet' (If you're wondering why the alphabet includes a penis and semen, read a book..or check out his work).

I'm getting lots of ideas now, and it's a funny thing-sometimes I really do forget to step back and do probably the most important thing for my process-sketch. Every single final concept I've ever come up with that was substantial has surfaced through a sketch process. Sometimes I get caught up in the digital world for too long and just have to go back to the drawing board.

...a photograph of me in Hollstatt, Austria in character as "the White Knight" on the community chessboard. Was going through all my photographs I've taken in Europe and came across this. Thought there was a chance you might be stressing about your CHESS Magazine redesign and wanted to give you a moment of comic relief.

I've actually got some pretty decent photographs of community chessboards from various European towns with people actually playing, seems to be a fairly common thing to come across in many of the towns there. I'll hook you up with them as soon as I come across them. I've got a pretty nice chess board too if you need it for any photographs/illustrations. Caio.

I made a light tent last semester and took some photographs along the way, so I thought I'd re-post them for those of you who may not have seen these last year and might be interested in making one.

LIGHT TENT CONSTRUCTION

1. I had a couple of friends over while I was making one, and one of them took this photograph while I was explaining the steps to them.

2. Obtain a cardboard box. The bigger, the better-I have several things I would like to photograph that won't fit in mine. For each side of the box (excluding the bottom/top), use a ruler/t-square to make a rectangle. Leave about 2'' around the perimeter. Cut off the top flaps of the box.

3. Spray paint the entire interior of the box white. This is necessary in case any areas are exposed after you complete the next step. Wait for the paint to dry. This is a good time to have a cigarette or a glass of tomato juice, whatever your fix is. Congratulate yourself, for you are half-way there already.

4. Cut 16 strips of white poster paper (or any sort of thick pure white paper) to line the inside of the box. Each vertical/horizontal span of cardboard that makes up each of the 4 rectangles needs to be covered with these strips. It's better to cut them slightly larger than the ver/horiz rectangles to make sure you completely cover the cardboard, and this is why you spray paint the inside white just in case you're off a bit.

5. At this point, you're ready to cover the three sides and top with fabric, obviously leaving the front side open. There are a wide variety of fabrics that you can use, different sources recommend different things. I bought several kinds to test out. The light tent that Liz had yesterday was made out of nylon. I bought white muslin, white nylon, white fleece and a couple of others. You may not want to go crazy with taping the fabric down at first, in case you find that it's not working for you and need to try another type.

As you will also see in this photograph, I placed a white poster board in the box that rests against the inside front of the box and gradually curves towards the back and up to the top back edge. This is helpful because it eliminates any horizon line interference and allows your object to be photographed in a clear, white void.

6. As far a lighting goes, any full spectrum lightbulb should do. Lighting is really the most important part, so make sure you buy the right kind if you don't have them already. I would also recommend having two available lamps, for some photos you will want to shine the light from both sides as opposed to a single top shot. I found it useful to leave extra fabric for covering the lamp heads when I needed to dim the light a bit, especially when photographing something glossy/shiny.

All in all, the complete construction took a little over an hour, if you don't count travels to get supplies. If you decide to make one, I wish you luck. Hope this was helpful.

I'm pretty set on featuring the gallery exhibition opening of Keith Haring in NYC as my cover story. This sort of opportunity is a rather rare occurence and as far as New York goes, Keith Haring was 'the last rockstar artist' (in the words of Laura :) and has been considered a legend in NYC since his death in 1990. So overall, I feel like it's an appropriate subject to headline a magazine that specializes in the 'To-Do's' of New York City.

If you are unfamiliar with his work, check it out. One of his trademarks is simple line drawings mostly of human-like characters arranged in playful, symbolic ways. I feel as though these characters could be interactive with the content of my magazine design and serve as a theme throughout the pages.

The following images contain sketches of my first few ideas for the cover image. At this point, I'm leaning towards using an actual photograph of his head/upper torso and exposing an open segment of his head, displaying:

1. an NYC wall/building/street scene displaying one of his famous graffiti works (or even actually having himself inside of his head creating one of his famous works on the 'wall of his mind')

or

2. a segment of his brain matter made up of one of his famous pattern works (he created several works which contain a certain degree of patternization. i.e., he would make a 'collage' of a bunch of those human like drawings)

The exposed 'inside the head' segment will most likely be illustrated.

The other alternative I've begun to develop you will see in the last image. Tried mixing elements of NYC that also relate to Haring....buildings, brick walls, typography, artistic elements of his work. If you look closely, you will find that the entire composition spells out: "Go inside the mind of Keith Haring"....obviously, I went a little crazy, the actual cover design would be much more organized, just trying to develop a set of elements that might work well together.

Didn't like the look of it when I applied it to my b/g image, so I decided that since I had made it for nothing, I may as well turn it into something. Keith Haring exhibition just opened in New York, and is running through October 30. Thought about incorporating this event for my cover story for my chosen editorial redesign, 'Time Out: New York'. Here is the only article I've found so far. Not quite long enough, but I'm keeping my eye out.

Riding the subway from his uptown apartment to the clubs, Haring noticed black paper hanging on billboards, noir sheets awaiting the next ad. Seizing this opportunity, Haring, under cloak of night, drew across the expanses of black paper. He drew all sorts. All sorts of childlike imagery. He drew barking dogs. Drew babies. Unisex figures. Ungendered figures. He drew spaceships. Drew warped, comic-strip TV sets. All using only cheap board chalk. Preferably white. The guerilla practice gained Haring great public reception, with critics dissecting these archaic modern day cave drawings, Pop Art that at once was urban storytelling, science fiction and hieroglyphics, both individually as cartoon cells, and together to form a narrative. They were all at once beautiful explorations of contemporary culture, and scenes in an otherwise unfinished story. This was the beginning of something big. Haring’s first written review, “The Radiant Child” by Rene Ricard in 1981, hailed Haring and his friend Jean-Michel Basquiat as the most original artists of the decade. Praise indeed. And it seemed more prophecy than high praise. Haring would, over the years, become a cult figure, with art emblazoned across hipster’s t-shirts, CD artworks, and myriad gallery spaces. Though few of these original etchings are seen, or even exist today.

“Keith Haring’s signature cartoon figures spoke to our inner child with familiarity,” says Kristine Woodward, owner of New York’s Woodward Gallery, in contemplation of contemporary art’s love affair with social activist Haring, whose iconic work, she reasons, responded to the New York City street culture of the 1980s and still resonates today, with myriad copycats and revelers still graffiti-ing walls with his signature bum-wiggling "Radiant Baby", a mass of bold lines and vivid colors. As Kristine notes to Ponystep, his work was easy to enjoy – on many levels. Her gallery will feature the playful subway drawings, studio interiors and other never-before-exhibited artworks by Haring that marked his early creative output, a time when his figures were still consigned to chalk drawings in the subways of New York, and he was only just realizing his signature style of amassed active figures bursting with life. Guests of Woodward will, for the very first time, get to appreciate Harings beginnings, when dogging the subway for empty walls and advertising boards constituted a hard day's work.

“We decided to do this exhibition and share these early works by Keith Haring to underscore the remarkable beginning of his career, looking to the past to further underscore Haring’s outstanding contribution, impact and relevance to art today,” Kristine says. How can you appreciate Haring's prolific output if you can't understand where he came from? “Although his work is now recognized globally, Woodward hopes to bring a new appreciation for this prolific artist, which we feel we are doing by featuring a variety of artistic mediums as Haring was exploring New York in his early years,” Kristine concludes.

Without too much thought or planning, these are some different layouts I've come up with over the past couple of hours. Sort of 'grid improvisations', if you will. I started by creating guides at certain distances throughout the first document, began to implement repetition of shapes loosely based on the spacial properties of the "Captain Rick" contents, then combined certain objects on a second document, set new ground rules and alignments, threw in circles, combined the next document with the previous, mixed and matched various documents and sections of documents, etc! I originally started out very meticulous, creating a grid while altering and placing the type as I went and sort of hit a dead end with a few boring layouts..so I think that this was a good exercise to try and attempt to push the project further.

Some random shapes/patterns I've come up with lately. I do these sorts of things from time to time to build shape reference files. I'm thinking of relating some sort of swooping lines to the letterform of my magazine logo to reference New York's subways/streets/movement and the theme of the magazine: "The What/Where/When Reader's guide to urban life in NY"... so some of the shapes I've created may come in handy for creating these letterforms. We shall see.

Since I had some ink left over in my pallette, I decided to print onto some 14''x17'' medium thickness sketch paper with the opaque fabric ink I used for the shirts. Turns out, it contains a little shine when you print it onto paper.

So Apple still doesn't have my computer ready. If you ever have any issues with your mac and need to take it in to the 'genius' bar...I would recommend you DO NOT take your baby to the Apple store at Northpoint mall in Alpharetta. I only took it there because they had appointments available the day my computer encountered issues(Wednesday), whereas Lennox and Perimeter only had appointments available starting the following weekend. Well, it will be 3 WEEKS this Wednesday since I turned my computer over to them, and today, after many days of polite phone calls and inquiries...I decided to call them up and let loose with how I really felt and I am supposedly getting it back tomorrow. We'll see...What I have learned from all of this is to never take your computer for granted. I had forgotten what life was like without access to Adobe at home.

Since I do most of my work in my studio and mostly late at night, I've been living in the stone age for the most part aside from working in class and the lab and over at random generous people's abodes. So this weekend I decided to do some things which require no computer. One of those things was screenprinting, a process I've just recently come to try. This is a photograph of one of my attempts to print on fabric, and it is an image I created for a brand identity project (Fantasyland Records) last year of Jimi Hendrix's face.

So for various reasons including no computer, too much attention to illustration detail and trying to execute almost my entire animation frame-by-frame I wasn't able to include all of the scenes I had originally created/planned. I am very motivated by many of the animations everyone created for this project and feel like I need to spend some time this weekend re-working my project since Paige was nice enough not to give us homework :)

I am keeping my fingers crossed for Apple to have my replacement computer ready by tomorrow (It's been 2 WEEKS now!)...Anyone else ever have this problem?
